Patrick Manzoni Receives Platinum Corporate Sponsor Award
Graduate student Patrick Manzoni (GMES) received the platinum corporate sponsor award for his outstanding student abstract at the 54th annual meeting of the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists, held in Anchorage, Alaska. Manzoni was selected as one of the three awardees based on his abstract, “Slope Stability Analysis of the Pacaya Volcano, Guatemala, Using Limit Equilibrium and Finite Element Method.” A review committee of three AEG members selected Manzoni’s abstract from more than 30 student abstracts. The fieldwork forming the basis of the research was conducted as part of the Partnerships for International Research and Education (PIRE) project.

Excellence in Teaching Award Nominee Alex Guth

Alex Guth for being selected as Michigan Tech’s representative for the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools Excellence in Teaching Award. One particular aspect of her teaching innovations that fascinated the selection panel was her work in online education.

Energy Education for Michigan Scholarship Announcement
Applicant criteria: must be a Michigan resident; must demonstrate financial need; must have a minimum 2.5 GPA (calculated on a 4.00 scale); must be a full-time student in good standing at a postsecondary, accredited Michigan “Educational Institution” at the time the award is paid (an “Educational Institution” is an organization that normally maintains regular faculty and curriculum and has a regularly enrolled student body in attendance); must be enrolled in a course of study which will allow for full time employment in the crude oil and natural gas industry. Renewable for up to 3 years or until a Bachelor’s Degree is earned, whichever occurs first) DEADLINE IS JULY 15th see attached application form.

Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists Scholarships Announced
Three Michigan Tech students won scholarships at the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologist (AEG) 56th Annual Meeting in Seattle.
Lauren Schaefer, a geology PhD student, won the Tilford and Lemke scholarships. The Tilford scholarship is provided to a graduate student for field studies. The Lemke scholarship is provided for outstanding student abstract for the work, “Geotechnical characterization of materials for stability analysis of large volcanic slopes: Are studies for specific volcanoes justifiable?” Lauren is advised by Thomas Oommen (GMES).
Bonnie Zwissler, a civil engineering PhD student, won the Lemke scholarship for the outstanding student abstract for “A study of the impacts of freeze-thaw on cliff recession at the Calvert Cliffs in Calvert County, Maryland.” This research was done as part of her MS and is advised by Oommen. Zwissler is pursuing her PhD and is co-advised by Eric Seagren (CEE) and Oommen.
Lindsay Davis, a Peace Corp Masters International (GMES) student won first place in the graduate division for the Martin L. Stout scholarship. The Stout scholarship supports environmental and engineering geologic studies by students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Lindsay is advised by Louisa Kramer (GMES). Michigan Tech would like to congratulate these three students for their phenomenal success.
The applications for the 2014 AEG student scholarships are due on February 1. Details of student membership to AEG and the scholarships can be obtained from the Michigan Tech AEG student chapter website or for more information contact Oommen, toommen@mtu.edu.

Neala Creasy Earns 2014 Women of Promise Award

Neala Creasy, a Senior in Applied Geophysics in the Geological and Mining Engineering & Sciences Department at Michigan Tech 2014 – Women of Promise award.
The Women of Promise program was initiated in 1999 as a result of a recommendation from the Presidential Council of Alumnae (PCA). The program recognizes current female Michigan Tech students from each academic department who go above and beyond what is expected of them in terms of being a well-rounded student, by demonstrating, for example, academic achievement, campus and community leadership, good citizenship, creativity, and other characteristics of high achieving individuals. In short, women who exemplify, early on, the criteria one would consider in selecting future inductees to the Presidential Council of Alumnae. This program is also an excellent opportunity for current female students to interact with and often to be mentored by successful Michigan Tech Alumnae.
The 2013 GMES winner was Audrey L. Hutton.

Michigan Tech Students Win First Place in National Mining Competition

The National Mining Competition announced the three winners from the 2013 event. First place Michigan Tech, second place University of British Columbia, and third place Edwards School of Business.
The winning Michigan Tech Mining team was Cora Hemmila, Matthew Younger, Matthew Schuman and Matthew Schwalen. The team advisor is James Murray Gillis, Instructor, Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences, Director, Mine Safety and Health Training Program.
The 2nd Annual National Mining Competition Awards Gala was hosted at TCU Place. TCU Place is Saskatoon’s Arts & Convention Centre. The banquet keynote speaker was N. Murray Edwards, President and Owner of Edco Financial Holdings, Ltd, investor in Canadian Natural Resources Ltd., Ensign Energy Service, Inc., Imperial Metals Corp., and Calgary Flames National Hockey League team.
The contest was held at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada at the Univesity of Saskatchewan. Founded in 2012, the National Mining Competition is Saskatchewan and Canada’s first undergraduate mining case competition. Teams are challenged to solve an innovative mining strategy case relevant to business issues facing firms within the global mining sector. This year’s competition is recruiting undergraduate students from the faculties of business, geology, engineering, and others, to team up and compete at this this unparalleled mining-industry event. The National Mining Competition is a student run, academic case competition focused on the mining industry. Undergraduate teams compete from universities & colleges across North America where they are challenged to develop an innovative solution to complex issues facing the mining industry. Michigan Tech Students Head to Detroit for Alternative Spring Break

Students from the Michigan Tech National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) visited seven middle and high schools in Detroit over their Spring Break, March 11-14, 2014, to promote college and engineering to K-12 students. Two GMES students were in the group, Simisola Arogundade and Samantha Fentress. In the evenings, they conducted Family Engineering Night events at three K-8 schools. NSBE’s Alternative Spring Break is conducted in collaboration with the Detroit Public Schools Office of Science and the Detroit Math & Science Center, and funded in part, with a grant from John Deere.
WXYZ Channel 7 news in Detroit aired a feature story about an interview with Michigan Tech NSBE student chapter members in Detroit, working to motivate middle and high school students in Detroit schools to see college in their futures and to study science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Rachael Pressley wins 1st place
Congratulations to Rachael Pressley, Senior, Geological Engineering student on winning 1st place in the Undergraduate Student Poster competition last Friday. Her project
“Questionning Uplift Rates for Suwannee River Basin, Florida”
was under the direction of Dr. Jason Gulley.
She will present this again for World Water Day on Wednesday, March 26, from 4-5pm in the Dow Lobby (campus side).

Senior Design Petroleum Group Invited to Present
In May 2014 this year’s senior design capstone group focusing on petroleum engineering was invited to the Northern Michigan Society of Petroleum Engineering (SPE) and the Michigan Oil and Gas Association (MOGA) meetings. Their talk, “A Technical Evaluation of the Sycamore Limestone Formation in the Anadarko Basin of Oklahoma” was presented at the SPE meeting where they were commended for the amount of work they were able to accomplish over two semesters. Data for the project was provided by Vitruvian Exploration LLC, and student travel was funded by Apache Corporation.
These meetings allowed the group consisting Garvie Crane, Audrey Hutton, & Charles Breithaupt an opportunity to network with alumni and employees in the oil and gas industry.

Michigan Tech’s Peace Corps Program #1 Again
For the 9th consecutive year, Michigan Tech’s Peace Corps program is ranked 1st in the nation for having the largest number of Peace Corps Master’s International students. This clip (http://abc10up.com/michigan-tech-garners-national-acclaim-for-peace-corps-program/), which aired on ABC 10 News Tuesday, May 13, 2014, included interviews with two of our department’s returning Peace Corps Volunteers. Edrick Ramos and Tyler Barton were able to share their experiences. The clip also featured photos courtesy of Jay Wellik and Brie Rust.

Vye receives 2014 Chrysalis Scholarship
Erika Vye has received the 2014 Chrysalis Scholarship. This award provides degree-completion funding for women geoscience graduate students whose education has been significantly interrupted by life circumstances. The awards are intended to cover costs associated with completion of her thesis/dissertation, beyond what is traditionally covered by primary research funding.

Summer 2014 GSG Softball Champions
Congratulations to the geo/mining department’s softball team! They took home the traveling trophy by defeating the forestry department in the graduate student government’s (GSG) summer 2014 softball league. This is the first time since 1991 the team has captured the title.

The International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) Cities on Volcanoes 8 Conference was held September 9-13, 2014 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Nine students, alumni, and faculty/staff presented at the conference.

Elisa Piispa Wins at AGU
GMES PhD student, Elisa Piispa, has won an Outstanding Student Presentation Award at the American Geophysical Union’s annual meeting. The title of Elisa’s presentation was “Paleomagnetism of the 1.1 Ga Baraga-Marquette dykes (Michigan, USA)”. The AGU Annual meeting was held in San Francisco, CA, December 15-19, 2014. Piispa’s PhD advisor is Aleksey Smirnov.
